Students take victory in courtroom battle

The trial took place at Lincoln Law School's moot court - a realistic recreation of a UK courtroom.

Law Students at the University of Lincoln had a chance to put their studies into practise earlier this week as part of a series of national courtroom battles.

The Lincoln Law School is taking part in two national competitions designed to test the skills of current law undergraduates.

The Lincoln team defeated the University of Cumbria in last month’s contest and have now progressed to round two of the UK Law Student Association Mooting Competition 2012. The final will take place at the UK Supreme Court in April.

The contest adopts the procedure of a mock trial centred on an allegation of manslaughter. Students are expected to do everything from researching the case, to making an opening speech to the jury and examining and cross examining witnesses; all the steps seen in live cases.

John Kelly, a lecturer at the Lincoln Law school and a former barrister said that the exercise offers an ‘invaluable experience for students who aspire to be members of the legal profession.’

Current law student Abi Bradshaw took part in the battle and said, “It was great to be able to put my skills to the test and pretend to be a lawyer for the day.”

The next round will take place in Lincoln in the spring.
